Cosmetic dermal fillers are injected into the skin to improve texture, volume and appearance. They can also smooth wrinkles caused by the natural aging process. Although dermal fillers can be used on many parts of the body, they are most often used on the face. Treatment can last anywhere from 4 to 18 months, depending on the type of dermal filler used and the severity of the wrinkles.
Dermal fillers are safe and generally well-tolerated. Be sure to inform your doctor of any and all allergies, especially to lidocaine, before treatment. Side effects, although rare, appear most often at the site of injection and may include:
Juvederm®, approved by the FDA in 2006, is an injectable gel filler made of hylauronic acid, a naturally occurring complex in the body. Aging, combined with sun and other environmental damage, can cause the natural hyaluronic acid to become depleted. This results in sunken skin and facial wrinkles, like those around the nose and mouth (often called parentheses). Juvederm® can help replace lost hylauronic acid and make the skin appear suppler and smoother.
One of the benefits of Juvederm® is that it is infused with lidocaine, which decreases the amount of discomfort during and after the injection. Juvederm® is also known for being smoother than other fillers, such as collagen, and can last up to 9 months.
One of the most popular and the best-selling dermal fillers is Restylane®. It is considered by many to be the best dermal filler available. The Restylane® lip filler and dermal filler was approved by the FDA in 2003 and is used for the treatment of wrinkles. Restylane® is also made of hylauronic acid, which is a natural substance found in the body. Restylane® injections are performed by doctors and are very effective at treating deep wrinkles that are resistant to other procedures such as facials, chemical peels or microdermabrasion. It is also used a a lip filler. Restylane® is the only hyaluronic acid gel filler that is approved to last 18 months. However, many patients benefit from touch-up treatments every four to nine months.
Treatment Areas for Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are used on several different areas of the face. The most common uses for Juvederm® and Restylane® are filling the deep folds near the nose and mouth and plumping the lips. In some cases, dermal fillers are also used to treat the following conditions:
- Sunken cheeks
- Hollow eyes
- Deep wrinkles or creases
- Facial scars
