Sonohysteroscopy
Gynecological Services at Macon, GA: Care and Prevention
A sonohysteroscopy, also known as a sonohysterogram or saline infusion sonography (SIS) is a specialized ultrasound procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus. During this test, sound waves and a computer are used to create images.
How Does a Sonohysteroscopy Work?
This test, used to examine your uterine lining, is not only safe, but it allows your doctor to identify more structures than a normal ultrasound. Here’s the step to step:
- You’ll be asked to lie flat on your back, knees bent. Similar to any gynecological exam
- Your healthcare provider will insert a thin, flexible tube known as a catheter into your cervix
- Saline, a salt solution, is infused into your uterus through the catheter.
- A transducer, or ultrasound wand, is placed in the vagina to send sound waves which will create a detailed image of your uterus
Sonohysteroscopy FAQ
What Can a Sonohysteroscopy Diagnose?
Given the detailed nature of this examination, it can diagnose an array of conditions. Including:
- Abnormal uterine shape
- Blocked fallopian tubes
- Endometriosis
- Scarring inside the uterus
- Polyps
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine cancer
Why Did My Doctor Prescribe a Sonohysteroscopy?
This procedure is typically recommended in cases of:
- Abnormal menstrual bleeding
- Infertility
- Repeated miscarriages
- Normal ultrasounds don’t provide enough information
How Should I Prepare?
Before your sonohysteroscopy:
- Your doctor will ask you to take a pregnancy test. 🚨You can’t undergo this procedure if you are pregnant or have inflammatory pelvic disorder
- Don’t schedule your sonohysteroscopy during your period. Vaginal bleeding can interfere with your doctor’s ability to see your uterine lining
- It’s best to schedule this test a week after your period starts, the uterine lining is at its thinnest which helps doctors spot abnormalities much easier
- You’ll be asked to empty your bladder before the test
This procedure usually takes no more than thirty minutes.
Is There Any Downtime?
No! You should be able to return to your normal activities right away. Yet, if you experience any discomfort after your procedure, you may:
- Abstain from intercourse for a day or so
- Any light bleeding or cramping is normal, yet it should stop within a couple of days
- If discomfort persists, you may take anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen
Since this test is an ultrasound, there’s no radiation exposure during this test making it incredibly safe!
