What is Urodynamic Testing?

Urodynamic tests help diagnose conditions affecting your urinary system or cause symptoms like urine incontinence, leaks, or retention. These procedures examine how well the parts of your lower urinary tract—the bladder, sphincters, and urethra—are working; how well your bladder can hold and empty urine. They analyze:

  • The nerve and muscle function of your bladder.
  • Pressure around and in your bladder.
  • How much and how fast your pee flows.

The results help the team at Women’s Health Institute determine the best treatment plan for your symptoms.

What Testing Procedures Make Up Urodynamics?

Cystometry

A cystometric test, or a cystometrogram, uses catheters (thin, flexible tubes) to indicate pressure inside your bladder. It can also measure contractions or spasms of the walls of your bladder while it is filling.

Pressure Flow Study

A pressure flow study measures how much pressure your bladder needs to urinate and how quickly your urine flows at that pressure. After the cystometric test, you will be asked to empty your bladder while a manometer measures your bladder pressure and flow rate.

Postvoid Residual Measurement

While your bladder is being filled for the cystometric test, it may suddenly contract and squeeze out some water. A manometer measures the pressure inside your bladder when this occurs, identifying the leak point pressure. This can tell your health care professional more about the kind of bladder problem you have.

Different tests require different procedural methods, and not all tests need to be performed at once. At Women’s Health Institute, we offer urodynamic testing services to help your provider and our team accurately diagnose your condition and design a personalized treatment plan.
