What Is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a procedure performed to diagnose any abnormalities in the cervix, vagina, and vulva. During the test, a special microscope (colposcope) inspects the tissue that lines the area. If there is suspicious activity, Dr. Umerah will collect a sample of the tissue for further testing.

Remember: It’s normal to feel nervous prior to a colposcopy, the Women’s Health Institute team have compiled all the information you need to feel comfortable on the day of.

What Can a Colposcopy Diagnose?

Colposcopies mostly check for abnormal cells, namely cancerous cells. Apart from that, they can help diagnose:

  • Genital warts.
  • Growths.
  • And polyps.

Additionally, Dr. Umerah may perform a colposcopy to assess other symptoms like excessive bleeding or itching.

When Is It Needed?

Providers may recommend a colposcopy exam if:

  • Your PAP smear results showed abnormalities.
  • Your pelvic exam showed irregularities.
  • Had a positive HPV test result.

How to Prepare

You should:

  • Avoid scheduling a colposcopy during your period.
  • Avoid having intercourse for at least 48 hours before the procedure.
  • Not use a tampon during the day of your exam.
  • Not take vaginal medicine for at least 48 hours before the test.

What to Expect

The procedure typically lasts between 10 and 20 minutes.

You’ll lie on your back just like during a regular pelvic exam.

A metal speculum is placed in your vagina (it does not hurt, although it might feel uncomfortable) to keep it open during the test.

Dr. Umerah will place the colposcope inches away from your vulva and carefully examine it. He will swab your cervix and vagina with cotton to clear any mucus and apply a solution to help highlight any areas of suspicious cells.

Colposcopy Results

Dr. Umerah will let you know straight away whether everything is within the healthy parameters. Should you need a biopsy, you can expect to wait up to 7 working days for the results.
