You know how it goes, having to go home when you are on your period because bleeding and pain are making it impossible to carry on with your day, crying through the pain, or having to change clothes because bleeding is out of control. If this resonates with you, you might have heard about endometrial ablation. Approximately one in three women seek treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding during their reproductive years. Among those, endometrial ablation is a common treatment option, with studies indicating that 85% to 90% of patients experience significant reductions in bleeding or complete cessation following the procedure.Â
What Is Endometrial Ablation?
Admittedly, menstruating is not the happiest time in the month for most women. However, for some, it is made worse due to heavy bleeding and pain. Enter: endometrial ablation, a procedure that reduces bleeding, drastically improving the quality of life.
The term ‘ablation’ comes from the Latin term ablat- ‘taken away’; therefore, ‘endometrial ablation’ refers to the removal of the endometrium. The endometrium is the mucous membrane lining the uterus and it changes throughout the menstrual cycle: about once a month, it thickens with extra blood vessels and then is shed during menstruation. Its removal is recommended in cases of abnormal bleeding that interferes with women’s everyday life.

The procedure consists in removing the endometrium with heat, cold, or radiofrequency, which is NovaSure’s technology.
Why Might I Need an Endometrial Ablation in Macon and Warner Robins, Georgia?
Georgian women are known for their resiliency, adaptability and active involvement in the community. They are the ultimate jugglers, balancing their careers and family responsibilities. When the menstrual cycle gets in the way, it is especially hard and debilitating. In many cases, heavy bleeding leads to low levels of healthy red blood cells (anemia) and causes sufferers to change tampons or pads every two hours or less. As a result, it interferes with the many activities that women engage in in Georgia.
Causes of Heavy Bleeding
Abnormal or heavy bleeding ,also called menorrhagia, can have many causes, ranging from hormonal issues to conditions or medications. They include:
- Hormonal imbalances such as thyroid disease or polycystic ovary syndrome.
- Growths in the uterus, such as polyps, fibroids, or adenomyosis.
- Infections, including STIs like gonorrhea and chlamydia.
- Pregnancy complications
- Medical conditions such as kidney disease, pelvic inflammatory disease or platelet disorders.
- Medications such as blood thinners, IUDs or hormone replacement therapy.

How Is Endometrial Ablation with NovaSure Performed?
NovaSure is a one-time, five-minute procedure using patented radiofrequency technology to deliver customized ablation to patients.
The procedure begins by Dr. Umerah inserting a slender wand into the cervix which, once it reaches the uterus, extends a triangular mesh device. Once in the uterus, the mesh expands and adapts to the size and shape of the uterus. Radiofrequency is then delivered through the mesh for about 90 seconds. After that, the mesh is pulled back into the wand, and the doctor removes both from the uterus.
What to Expect
- In the majority of cases, women who have had endometrial ablation with NovaSure report having lighter or no periods afterward. As a result, they can take on more activities that they enjoy, experience improved energy levels, moods, and therefore better self-confidence.
- Immediately after the ablation, though, patients might experience cramps, nausea, or vomit, although these symptoms usually subside within 24 to 48 hours.
- It is important to note that chances of getting pregnant reduce after the procedure. In addition, pregnancy is dangerous because the uterine lining cannot support fetal development.
- At Macon’s Women’s Health Institute, Dr. Umerah recommends planning to give the body up to three months to fully heal.Â
